Best Place to Be

Episode Three

Baz Ashmawy travels to Paris where he meets Ruth Algar from Westmeath, content creator Mandy Cherie from Donegal; and business owner Rebecca Devaney from Dublin.

Baz visits the suburbs of Paris to meet Ruth Algar, 70, who left Mullingar for France to work as an au pair when she was just 23. Ruth reminisces about her very successful athletics career in Ireland and then France. She is the only athlete to represent both Ireland and France at a senior level in sprinting.

Now, all these years later she has created a wonderful life in France where she has two grown up daughters and grandchildren. Ruth introduces Baz to one of her daughters who is a well known actress and comedian in France, and she recounts to him her summers as a child in Mullingar. Baz also has the pleasure of meeting Ruth’s two very young grandchildren and enjoying a kick around with young Ernest who gets one up on Baz.

In central Paris with the Eiffel Tower as their backdrop Baz and 26-year-old Donegal native, content creator Mandy Cherie strike a pose, and a little off the beaten tourist track Baz meets, 40-year-old, former haute couture embroiderer Rebecca Devaney who runs Textile Tours of Paris. Rebecca brings Baz on a tour of St Ouen Flea Market, where he gets to grips with Parisian style.
