Heat My Home ***New Series***

Synopsis

With prices only going up and the planet under pressure, more and more people are saving money – and energy – in their own homes by taking on the retrofit challenge.

We’ll show you what’s actually doable, and what costs are involved.

From heat pumps to H-VAC, Kieran breaks down the technical jargon and makes sense of all the retrofit lingo so it’s easy to follow.

Along the way we also features stories of people who have successfully achieved Retrofits and see what kinds of savings they are making with an array of measures, from solar to wind energy and beyond in homes and businesses around Ireland.

Episode 1

The first episode in the series features Sylvia Thompson, a retired speech and language therapist who is originally from Limerick but bought a house near Tralee in the mid nineties. The 1950s era cottage had little to no insulation and Sylvia had to concentrate her heating efforts to one room. The 75-year-old had enough of the cold and decided to use her savings to embark on a retrofit project, despite some people telling her she was too old to take it on! We follow the progress of the retrofit, which is a major job involving digging up floors as Kieran checks in along the way, over almost a year.

Sylvia has an added interest in eliminating her old fossil fuel oil boiler as she is secretary of the Kerry Sustainable Energy Co-Operative.
