This Christmas, RTÉ invites audiences to join in a magical celebration of the season with Christmas in Kildare, a spectacular annual concert set against the stunning backdrop of the historic St. Brigid’s Cathedral in the heart of Kildare. The event also marks the 1500th anniversary of Ireland’s beloved St. Brigid, offering a unique blend of music, heritage, and festive joy.
Presented by broadcaster Marty Whelan and internationally acclaimed soprano Celine Byrne, Christmas in Kildare features the renowned RTÉ Concert Orchestra alongside an extraordinary lineup of artists. This year’s performers include May Kay, Paul Noonan of Bell X1, Lisa Hannigan, Méav Ní Mhaolchatha, and Colm Mac Con Iomaire. Also joining the celebrations are the 25-strong all-female choir Dulciana, rising stars Kingfishr, the Theodora Byrne ensemble, Grammy Award-winning artist Rhiannon Giddens and the afore mentioned world renowned soprano and another Kildare native, Celine Byrne.
St. Brigid’s Cathedral itself dates to 1123 and has served as both defensive castle and church since Norman times. Now a Church of Ireland cathedral, the east window features stained glass depicting St. Brigid, St. Patrick & St. Columba and was extensively restored over a ten-year period starting in 1989.
Audiences can tune in to Christmas in Kildare on RTÉ One, RTÉ Player and RTÉ lyric fm during the festive season. Join us for an unforgettable evening that blends Ireland’s rich history and musical excellence, celebrating the most wonderful time of the year in honour of St. Brigid’s 1500-year legacy.
