Episode 4 – Sweden
Ivan Keane, in his fifties, has been living in Sweden for 24 years. He lives with his Swedish wife Osa and their three teenage children on Lidingo, in Stockholm’s archipelago. Six years ago, Ivan left his engineering job to open his own microbrewery, Keane Brewing. Baz visits the brewery and joins Ivan on his delivery run, meeting some interesting expats along the way. Later, Baz is kept on his toes while helping out at a beer tasting event. Baz rounds off his visit to Ivan travelling by boat to his home where the family host him for dinner.
It’s not all relaxing evenings for Baz in Stockholm, however. He joins Clare native Michelle Cotter for GAA training. Michelle, in her early thirties, has been living in Sweden for the last two and a half years. She has a successful career in a music production company and has embedded herself in the Irish community in Stockholm, where she is chairperson of the city’s GAA Club, Stockholm Gaels. Baz dons a whistle and in full bainisteoir mode, puts the team through their paces at a training session.
Series Overview
In the second instalment of this popular series for RTÉ One, Baz Ashmawy returns, bag packed and passport in hand, to hit the road to meet Irish people who have left Ireland behind to set up home somewhere else in the world.
Over the six episodes Baz meets a variety of Irish people who have settled abroad and finds out about their adopted home when it comes to how they live, work and play.
Across the series, Baz visits Belgium, Portugal, France, Sweden, Switzerland, and Cyprus. In each country he spends time with a host of Irish expats, learning about their new lives and country, finding out why, for them, it’s The Best Place To Be.
