CHANGING FACE OF THE LIBERTIES
This evening’s Nationwide programme is from the Liberties in Dublin with stories from and about this part of the Capital. The programme explores how Dublin keeps on changing as the team discovers how this old part of the city has evolved in recent years. Reporter John Kilraine explores development plans for the area, visits some of the historic old pubs and new award-winning restaurants while presenter Anne Cassin finds green spaces where you’d never expect them in the city.
Thomas Street, which is the main thoroughfare of The Liberties, has suffered the effects of economic change more than most. It was once a big draw for Dublin’s shoppers however those great days are gone but the historic street is finding a new lease of life as reporter John Kilraine has been finding out.
Just a stone’s throw from Thomas Street is Bridgefoot Street Park, an urban oasis with open grassy areas for relaxation and recreation, providing much-needed green space for locals. The park also features community allotments which provide a social outlet, making it a vibrant hub in the heart of Dublin. Presenter Anne Cassin recently visited the park which forms part of the rejuvenation in the area.

PROGRAMME ON IRISH SINGER BRIDIE GALLAGHER FROM COUNTY DONEGAL
Nationwide goes backstage at An Grianán Theatre in Letterkenny, County Donegal to uncover the story behind a collection of stunning gowns that are on display there and that became as famous as the person who once wore them. The show delves into the life of the famous owner, singer Bridie Gallagher, whose story has come full circle back to the theatre where she last performed 25 years ago. Also on the show are the talented individuals working behind the scenes who have given these dresses a new lease of life. Presenter Bláthnaid Ní Chofaigh hears about Bridie Gallagher’s glittering career and sees some of the 100 gowns which were custom made for her performances.

PROGRAMME FOCUSING ON HIGH END CRAFT
This evening’s Nationwide focuses on Irish craftwork produced and designed in Dublin, Wicklow and Kilkenny as the team meet, two crafts people who are producing large and small works of art which will impress and inspire.
Wicklow based sculptor, David McGlynn is selling all over the world and his unique bronze pieces are much in demand. His ‘one off’s’ are collectors’ items but he recently was contracted by Tipperary Crystal to produce a series of affordable sculptures, further increasing his acclaim. Mary Fanning visited David in his Wicklow studio to explore the world of bronze through his eyes.
An artist who specialises in wired sculpting has recently made the move from Galway to Kilkenny, bringing with him a wealth of knowledge and creativity. He’s been sharing his skills with the members of Amárach Nua, an organisation providing training and education to those in recovery from addiction. Reporter Zainab Boladale has the story.
