ROOM TO IMPROVE

Peter, Lisa and their twins Grace and Louise (9) live in a four-bed house in Rathfarnham, Dublin 14. They moved into their detached home just three years ago, shortly afterwards Lisa was diagnosed with MS. Now her needs and those of her family have completely changed.

In order to make the house accessible for Lisa, Dermot needs to completely rearrange the functions of the downstairs. Peter and Lisa sleep upstairs and Lisa is determined to remain doing so, so Dermot must also install a lift and address the layout upstairs too. Peter and Lisa’s budget is €150,000.

Peter O’Shea is an accountant who once worked in the construction industry, so he intends to keep a close eye on the budget and get stuck into the building works should the need arise.

For Dermot this is his biggest project yet and unlike any other. Here every detail must be executed meticulously.

Agreeing the exact location of a lift in a domestic home is a first for Dermot and proves to be far from straightforward. While on site Dermot’s plans go through numerous re-designs.
