On any given day some 4,000 staff come to work in one of Ireland’s busiest hospitals, Cork University Hospital. On any given day staff here care for some 800 inpatients, 800 outpatients and over 240 emergencies. On any given day in CUH, hearts are broken and hearts are mended, lives are lost and lives are saved, and families find enormous strength in each other.
This series follows staff shifts and patient journeys across the hospital. Each story was captured in one single day. Together they tell a bigger story – of CUH on Any Given Day.
Episode 5
Patricia is rushed to CUH by ambulance. She is critically ill, struggling to breathe. She needs a special pressure mask to force oxygen into her lungs and keep her airways functioning. The Emergency Department team’s first job is to stabilise Patricia and then try to find the cause of her acute breathing problems.
Peter has a large aortic aneurysm. He requires surgery to fix it before it bursts, which would likely prove fatal. CUH is a training hospital. The surgical team led by Consultant Vascular Surgeon Greg Fulton will today include young surgeons in training, one of whom will execute a critical part of today’s operation.
Sue has stage 4 ovarian cancer. She is in CUH today for chemotherapy. It’s her second diagnosis of the disease. Consultant Oncologist Dearbhaile Collins has identified a new drug that could potentially help Sue. The drug is only available as part of a clinical trial.
Shay is 4 months old. Today he will have an operation to try and correct his cleft lip.
