On any given day 4000 staff come to work in one of Ireland’s busiest hospitals … Cork University Hospital.
On any given day staff here care for some 800 inpatients, 800 outpatients and over 240 emergencies.
On any given day in CUH, hearts are broken and hearts are mended, lives are lost and lives are saved, and families find enormous strength in each other.
This series follows staff shifts and patient journeys across the hospital. Each story was captured in one single day. Together they tell a bigger story – of CUH on Any Given Day.
Episode 3
Its 1am. Christy is having a heart attack. He is on his way to CUH from University Hospital Waterford. Registrar Dylan Finnerty has been in constant contact with Consultant Cardiologist Richard Tanner. Richard is on-call for emergencies and has made a decision to Activate the Cath Lab.
The Paediatric Allergy clinic in CUH is busy. Patients here are treated for a range of challenges including food allergies. 11 year old Ciaran was diagnosed with a severe peanut allergy at an early age. Ciaran is in CUH today for an Oral Food Challenge.
Today Surgical Oncologist Mark Corrigan will operate on Antoinette. In November 2024, Antoinette received a breast cancer diagnosis. She had a mastectomy on her right breast. Subsequent tests revealed that Antoinette has a variant of the BRCA gene. Antoinette has made a big decision. She is in CUH today to remove her healthy breast and have a reconstruction.
A five-year-old girl is being rushed to CUH. She is barely conscious and her vitals are poor. The Emergency Department team is standing by ….
Surgeon James Harty is preparing for major surgery. Patient Brian Murphy requires a total femur replacement to try and keep him walking into the future …
