RTÉ One will broadcast Behind the Curtain, a new documentary offering rare behind-the-scenes access to the Gaiety Theatre pantomime and the life of its iconic Dame, Joe Conlan, on Monday 2 February 2026 at 7.00pm.
The 30-minute film follows Joe during his final season at the Gaiety, using a single
performance to frame a reflection on his life, career and lasting impact on Irish pantomime.
From the backstage corridors of the Gaiety to Synge Street CBS, where Joe first
discovered his love of performance, the documentary traces the key moments that shaped
him. It also explores his cancer journey and recovery, including his Camino pilgrimage
where he raised thousands for the Irish Cancer Society, before returning to the Gaiety for
his final performance.
Reflecting on his career and final season, Joe Conlan says, “The Gaiety Panto has been
my life for so many years. Standing on that stage, seeing the faces in the audience and
knowing you’ve helped create those memories is something very special. To be able to
finish this chapter with gratitude, after everything I’ve been through, means more to me
than I can put into words.”

Directed by Max Barry and Tiernan O’Rourke, the film was developed over three years and
grew from an original short film. The directors say, “Joe trusted us with his story at a
moment of real change in his life. Following him over such a long period allowed us to
capture not just the spectacle of the panto, but the quieter moments behind it. This film is
about legacy, resilience and the power of performance to bring people together.”
Featuring contributions from Baz Ashmawy, Marty Whelan, Melanie Finn, Donal Skehan,
Simon Delaney, Rose Henderson, Linda Martin and Norma Sheehan, Behind the Curtain
offers a portrait of Joe Conlan both on stage and away from the spotlight.
