Oileánach

Oileánach – Clár 2, An tOileán Iarthach

Tá oileáin scaipthe ar fud chósta Chonamara, oileáin a mbíodh cónaí orthu uair amháin ach atá anois tréigthe ar chúis amháin nó ar chúis eile. Sa tsraith seo, tabharfaidh Treasa Bhreathnach sciurd ar na hoileáin seo agus tabharfar roinnt de scéalta na n-oileánach chun cuimhne chomh maith le scéal reatha na n-oileán. Bhíodh cónaí i gceithre theach ar an Oileán Iarthach i gCeantar na n-Oileán uair amháin. Faigheann Treasa Bhreathnach an deis an t-oileán a shiúil in éindí leis na colceathracha Micheál Ó Cadhain agus Joe Curran as Cill Chiaráin, ar as an oileán a seanathair.

There are islands scattered around Connemara’s coast, islands that were once inhabited but are now abandoned for one reason or another. In this series, Treasa Bhreathnach will visit these islands, bringing to life some of the islanders’ stories as well as exploring the current state of the islands.

There were four houses on the Connemara island Iarthach in Ceantar na nOileán, a group of Islands off the west Connemara coast once upon a time. Treasa Bhreathnach gets the opportunity to walk the island along with her cousins Michael Cholman Joeín Ó Cadhain and Joe Curran from Cill Chiaráin, whose grandfather was from the island. Micheál tells us stories about the large púcán (a traditional boat) they had on the island, about the islanders showing the way for the steamer that would come to Cill Chiaráin once a year. We also hear from Pat Coyne, the last person to be born and raised on the island, who now lives in America.
