Home Rescue: The Big Fix is a heart-warming mix of human stories and home makeover – a whirlwind of decluttering, teamwork and positivity – changing people’s lives for the better by redesigning their homes, replacing chaos with order and rediscovering the things that really matter. The Home Rescue crew is one big family where everyone plays their part and – for designer Dee, builder Pete and their team of fitters, painters, chippies and clutterbusters – every second counts because they have just five days to complete each makeover. That’s right: five days from first sight to finishing touches! This year, the Home Rescue team brings the Big Fix to a variety of homes in Dublin, Kildare, and Wexford.
Episode 6
In the final episode of the season, the Home Rescue team help Margaret Pierce and her son Shane, who has autism, with their fourth-floor apartment in Scholarstown, Co Dublin that is overwhelmed by clutter. Over the years, Margaret and Shane have coped with living in a mobile home and a stay in emergency accommodation, as well as chronic illness, before they were finally offered a two-bed fourth floor apartment in Scholarstown. Margaret is a self-confessed bargain hunter and, five years on, the apartment is now full of clutter, from second-hand furniture, books, and gym gear, to archery items and hula hoops. With barely enough space to move, Margaret knows things need to change, but a chronic health condition has made that impossible.
Working with an apartment is a huge challenge for Designer Dee, Builder Pete and the crew, not helped by the fact that Margaret and Shane live four stories up. Determined to create a functioning layout, Dee completely rethinks the limited space, creating clever storage solutions and future-proof design, while also persuading Pete to build a kitchen garden on the balcony. The team transforms the apartment into a calm, functional haven, giving this resilient family the fresh start they deserve.
