Home Rescue: The Big Fix is a heart-warming mix of human stories and home makeover – a whirlwind of decluttering, teamwork and positivity – changing people’s lives for the better by redesigning their homes, replacing chaos with order and rediscovering the things that really matter. The Home Rescue crew is one big family where everyone plays their part and – for designer Dee, builder Pete and their team of fitters, painters, chippies and clutterbusters – every second counts because they have just five days to complete each makeover. That’s right: five days from first sight to finishing touches! This year, the Home Rescue team brings the Big Fix to a variety of homes in Dublin, Kildare, and Wexford.
Episode 1
In 1980, Ann and Peter O’Malley bought their 3-bed semi in Clondalkin. It felt spacious then, but 45 years on the house is bursting at the seams. Ann, a former sales assistant, is known affectionately as “Buy Me Buy Me” for her love of bargains and bulk-buying, much to the dismay of her daughter Charlene, who nominated her mam for the show. Over the years, the clutter has taken over: clothes, cleaning supplies, keepsakes and ornaments – even Ann’s wardrobe doors can’t open fully! The challenge became urgent last year when husband Peter, a retired chef, lost 90% of his sight due to giant cell arteritis. Ann is now his full-time carer, and their cluttered home has become a daily obstacle course and trip hazard. Designer Dee steps in with a bold vision to make the space safer and more accessible for Peter, while creating a brighter, better-functioning home for Ann and their son Graham. With clever decluttering, colour-contrast surfaces, and a kitchen layout designed to prevent trips and falls, Dee’s redesign focuses on safety and dignity for Peter, and comfort for the whole family. Every detail matters. Builder Pete and the Home Rescue team are ready for one of their most heartfelt transformations yet.
