Droimeann
Along the Shannon Estuary, in one of the most unique habitats in Ireland, Tom Keane has found a way of productively farming, in tune with nature and the abundant wildlife surrounding him. His farm is a patchwork of delicate habitats, including salt marshes, brackish lagoons, and species-rich pastures, and is perfect for outwintering the ancient Irish native cattle breed, Droimeann. Ella McSweeney visits Tom, and explores how being part of the National Parks and Wildlife Service Farm Plan Scheme contributes to preserving and promoting biodiversity on his farm.
Slurry
Stephen Robb is in Northern Ireland, where farmers are testing a new method to manage slurry and reduce its environmental impact. Animal slurry is a valuable natural fertilizer for farmers, but the nutrients it contains—especially phosphorus—can cause significant environmental damage if not handled properly. Stephen explores a project launched by the Northern Ireland Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs, which aims to develop more sustainable and effective ways of managing slurry.
Equine Assisted Learning
Growing up on a small farm, Eadaoin O’Connell always understood the benefit of working outdoors, alongside her beloved horses. Now she uses that insight, and just 2 acres of the 30 acre family farm, to provide those same experiences to people with social, learning or physical challenges. Eadaoin is an Equine Assisted Learning Facilitator, who works in partnership with her horses, to help clients develop essential life skills. Darragh McCullough visited Siúl Liom in Mungret, Co. Limerick and met some of those benefitting from the service.
