This year, it will be 50 years since RTE Radio 1 first broadcast live on the morning of Christmas Eve on Grafton Street. And over the years, there are some wonderful stories. They broadcast in three feet of snow, in arctic conditions and have featured presidents and the best of Irish music, including Gavin James, Glen Hansard and Imelda May. This year, we will have the great Johnny Logan performing – he will do a medley of his Eurovision hits and he will open the show with Driving Home For Christmas.
Brendan O’Carroll of course will be on hand with co-compere duties.
Many of the audience have come to most of the shows over the years and it’s Joe’s favourite show of the year, full of Christmas joy, he commented;
‘Even before I worked in RTE the Christmas Eve radio show was part of my annual December ritual. What a wonderful experience it has been working on it with the legendary Gaybo from 1990. A decade later when Gay retired Brendan O’Carroll came on board ensuring the tradition will get to its golden anniversary on Tuesday December 24th. More golden radio moments ahead!’
On the show this year is;
- Johnny Logan
- Camille O’Sullivan
- George Murphy
- Eleanor McEvoy
- Susan McFadden
- Shobsy
Dirtbirds and June Rogers will be part of the comedy line-up.
