Johann Nepomuk Hummel died on this day in 1837, and this morning, Vlad takes a moment to explore the exquisite chamber music of this composer. Having lived from the last quarter of the 1700s through to the first third of the 1800s, and a pupil of Mozart, Salieri and Haydn, his music organically reflects the transition from the Classical to the Romantic era. Hummel significantly influenced later piano music of the 19th century, especially the works of Chopin, Liszt and Mendelssohn. Although his music slipped under the radar after his death and for much of the 19th century, with the return of attention to the Classical period and with the rise of historically informed performance, his music has seen a revival, and on this Sunday’s Vox Nostra we’ll get to enjoy some of the recordings that are a fruit of that resurgence.
