On October 5, 8.10am -9am Countrywide is live from Edwina Gurkin’s home in Leitrim as the Rambling project is launched. Contact and Creator of Rambling Houses Project, Edwina Guckian is creating a series of rambling houses over the Winter in Leitrim, where volunteers would bring old people to a fireside chat, a bit of music and dancing. The idea is to help combat rural isolation and loneliness in the dark Winter evenings. Edwina will be appealing to our listeners to bring this project nationwide. This project is supported by Leitrim County Council and Creative Ireland.
On the OB will be Edwina herself, her house, the area (She will have a new 6-week-old baby along with her other two children there), the story of where she got the rambling houses idea and what it entails. PJ Noonan, Edwina’s Neighbour and the reason why she is doing the project, plus another member of the community who would benefit from Rambling houses.
Music with Fionnula Maxwell singer and volunteer along with Brian Moxty, Box player. Fionnuala Maxwell is a singer and teacher who has made it her mission to promote and recover Leitrim’s musical heritage. She finds the lyrics or music of often forgotten Leitrim songs in historical manuscripts or publications, and performs her own interpretations of them.
Also participating will be members of the All Ireland winning ladies Intermediate Football Championship and a report on social farming in Leitrim.
