THIS IS ART CLUB!

SERIES THREE – PRESS RELEASE AND EPISODE GUIDE.

THIS IS ART CLUB! returns to RTÉ2 and RTÉ Player

The new series starts on 19th September 2024

Coinciding with the annual This Is Art! 2024 digital art competition, RTÉ Young People’s Department is delighted to announce the return of the tv series This is Art (TIA) Club! the show which champions and celebrates the work of young artists in Ireland today.

Set in the Royal Hibernian Academy School, the first episode will broadcast on 19th September at 5.30pm on RTÉ2 and RTÉ Player.

The new series explores some of the age old principals or elements of art. We find out what is meant by terms like Balance, Symmetry, Rhythm, Harmony, Pattern, Proportion and Scale. They say you’ve got to know the rules before you break them. The new series of TIA Club! will help to demystify some of the golden rules of art making, so you can learn when to use them and even when to lose them!

Under the studio guidance of artists like Vivienne Roche RHA, Una Sealy RHA, Blaise Smith RHA we’ll discover more about some of the tricks and techniques used by the great artists to make great art. We’ll see first hand how the professionals approach genres such as still life, portraiture and even sculpting and modelling to scale.

While presenter and artist Shane Keeling gets busy with some studio based art experiments, Ross Carvill our usual artist in residence is let loose on some wild art making adventures.

‘Never go anywhere without a sketchbook’ is Ross’ motto and in this series Ross visits the circus, the zoo, the seaside and even treats us to a drawing tour of his favourite spots in New York City.

We’re finding what creative antics are afoot across the length and breadth of the country with young creators showing us the how’s, what’s and why’s of their amazingly diverse artistic hobbies including lacemaking in Headford, woodturning and felting in Waterford and puppet-making in County Clare.

Deborah Donnelly leads a gang of first timers to the top of Bray Head to try their hand at oil painting ‘en plen air’ and in Cork, artist apprentice Ella helps German artist Stephanie Leüning transform Cork’s iconic Shandon district with a multi-coloured foam art installation.

We catch up with recent winners of the annual This Is Art! Competition with profiles of winning artworks from Dublin, Donegal and Waterford. In Galway we drop in on group category award winners at St. Joseph’s Special School as they get busy with a group cyanotype workshop.
