Episode 4. Friday, 26th April, RTE1. Co.Kerry with Ursula Jacob.
For her first walk Ursula starts in Tralee along the old ship’s canal and out onto the coastline towards Fenit in the shadow of the Slieve Mish mountains. She is joined on her way on a section of the new greenway by Kerry footballing legend Kieran Donaghy. Upon reaching Fenit she swaps the land for the sea for a boat trip to Fenit lighthouse accompanied by a very special group of local celebrities who swim alongside her boat.
For her second walk, she heads south towards Derrynane to settle in for a hike which, even though it is only 10km long, takes in sections of 3 routes, an Old Butter route, The Kerry Way and The Mass Loop. With the rugged atlantic coastline spread out before her, Ursula weaves her way down through iconic Kerry landscapes of fields, bohreens and hidden paths in the direction of Derryanane. Stopping off at the home of Daniel O’Connell for a tour around the gardens she then meets Dr Paddy Bushe to hear the beautiful story of a recently uncovered path which had been hidden in the grounds of Derrynane and rediscovered through the words of a poem written by Daniel O’Connell’s daughter, Ellen.
