Tracks and Trails

Tracks & Trails returns for its 11th Season with six episodes across 7 Counties on the Island of Ireland.

Six presenters explore trails in Waterford, Offaly, Monaghan and Tyrone, Kerry, Kilkenny and Tipperary.   In this uplifting series, which represents what is best about our wild and natural landscapes our presenters take us on a journey along some of the most beautiful trails on the Island of Ireland.

The presenters get a chance to link their passions for history and poetry, science and nature along the trails they discover.  The people that they meet bring colour and context to where the trails take them and as a viewer we get a real insight into the presenter as they bring their own personality, pace and perception of their experiences as they walk.

Each trail is challenging in its own way,  but all of these walks follow established national waymarked trails, including, St Declan’s Way, the Monaghan Way,  the East Leinster way, The Royal Canal Greenway, The Kerry Way, as well trodden riverside and cliffside paths. This is about celebrating our outdoors, and discovering what is on offer in abundance on trails all over Ireland.

Episode 1. Friday, 5th April 7.30pm, RTE One. Co.Waterford with Nicola Tallant

Season 11 opens with crime journalist and podcaster Nicola Tallant hiking the challenging Boolas Loop in the Comeragh Mountains in Co.Waterford.

This magificnent 10km loop is wild and rural, rocky and steep.  The climb to the top is most definitely worth it revealing rolling landscapes as well as hidden mountain lakes known as Boolas.

For her second walk, Nicola follows a clif top trail starting out from one of Ireland’s most loved and picturesque seaside villages, Dunmore East. This 7.5km linear coastal route has everything a coastal walk should have; dramatic headlands, vast ocean views, and plenty of tales of smuggling and old sea legends.  Nicola visits the three pretty coves which are found along this trail; Portally Cove and Rathoylan Cove and finally Ballymacaw Cove, where she finishes this beautiful walk and her trip to Waterford.
