What goes missing when a language is documented only by men or sanitised to protect the idea of a saintly female population? Award-winning and outrageous bilingual standup Bláithín de Burca takes us on a jubilant journey into the Irish language past, present and future in search of wild and wanton womens’ words to unlock a uniquely Irish experience of womanhood. Featuring laugh-out loud interviews with Manchán Magan, Dr Sharon Arbuthnot of Cambridge University, The Wild Geeze, Growler, Hysteria Comedy Collective and the famous word-collector Toose MacGearailt, The Irish for Sex is sure to be an eye-opening, side-splitting ride as Gaeilge.
Traversing the country with her Foclóir Brille (clitoral dictionary) underarm, Bláithín meets with Gaeilgeoirs from across the island of Ireland, who share some hilarious, and some beautiful words for the most intimate parts of their lives. Combining comedy with a radical re-examination of the Irish language and cultural history, the episode follows Bláithín’s romp around Ireland to find the words she feels are missing not just from her stand-up, but her everyday life.
The documentary will be accompanied by the launch, on RTE.ie, of a very unique online dictionary, An Foclóir Brille.
