EAR TO THE GROUND

This week on the show, Darragh will be spending a busy day with a hoof trimmer in Co Tipperary, Ella will be in Galway meeting some locals concerned about water quality in the Corrib and Maeve meets a man with a story of addiction and recovery in rural Ireland.

Cocaine Addiction
Ian Sullivan was just 18 when he first used Cocaine in 2005. What began as something he did occasionally, quickly became an addiction which consumed his life for the next 13 years. The fact that he was living in rural Ireland made no difference when it came to obtaining the drug. Maeve Dineen spends the day with Ian, who is now in his second year of recovery, and finds out more about the impact of cocaine on rural Ireland.

Hoof Trimming
Katherine Buckley is a 26 year old cattle hoof trimmer from Lisgorrif, in Tipperary. Raised on a suckler farm, Katherine has always loved caring for animals. Darragh spends the day with her to find out what’s involved in the skillful practice of trimming cows’ hooves.

Lough Corrib
This summer we witnessed the disastrous consequences years of pollution had on the island’s biggest lake Lough Neagh in Northern Ireland. The island’s second biggest lake is the majestic Lough Corrib in County Galway. Ella finds out how concerns about the water quality of the Corrib’s streams and rivers have prompted local angling clubs to work with local farmers to help protect this very important resource.
