Nationwide meets some interesting people whose roots are in different parts of the world but who have made their home here in Ireland including the Indian community whose dance school in Dublin is thriving. Plus, an African family whose father’s books for children are bringing stories of Africa to children here in Ireland.
BHANGRA DANCERS/REPORT MARY FANNING
Moving to a different country and culture is a momentous task for any person or family, you leave a part of yourself behind but a group of Sikhs from the Punjab region of India, who have all settled here in Ireland, have created an avenue to integrate their community through dance and embrace the Irish culture. They are the Shamrock Bhangra dancers and reporter Mary Fanning went to meet them.
AFRICAN BOOK/REPORT VALERIE WATERS
It isn’t too often you hear of African children’s story books being available in both Gaeilge and English. Valerie Waters went to west Dublin to meet the author of such a publication and heard it read in both languages by his sons.

Nationwide visits the beautiful Ballintubbert Gardens & House in County Laois, a 14-acre estate with a fascinating history dating back hundreds of years. Renowned for its spectacular gardens, which include a mix of landscapes and lawns, wildflower meadows, water features and woodlands, was designed over decades by the hands of many dedicated gardeners. Bláthnaid Ní Chofaigh hears about the recent award they won for becoming ‘Ireland’s first fully organic ornamental garden’ and also hear about the many theatrical and literary greats including actors Sir John Hurt, Sebastian Shaw, poet laureate Cecil Day Lewis, all, whose legacy lives on at Ballintubbert.

As Nationwide celebrates three decades on air, the team has been looking back through old programmes for stories of people, places and events from right across the country to bring together reflective movements from this extraordinary 30 year television journey. This evening Nationwide turns back the clock to the year 2010 when the then Nationwide presenter, Michael Ryan visited the Dingle Peninsula to meet Fungie the Dolphin whose appearances delighted visitors from near and far. Plus, Nationwide find out what happened the village built by Hollywood, when they came to Kerry to film the blockbuster movie Ryan’s Daughter in 1968.
