SisterS episode 5 Sophie Thompson as Sheryl

SERIES SYNOPSIS

Toronto, Canada.

Sare’s mother dies. In the aftermath of her death, she discovers that her father was not her actual father, he was in fact, an Irish busker her mother met while backpacking some thirty years ago. She decides to travel to Ireland to track him down, only to discover she has a half-sister.

Dublin, Ireland.

Suze’s life is unravelling – she’s lost her partner, her flat, her job…and not to mention – her dignity. On her 37th birthday, her life takes an unexpected turn, when her Canadian half-sister shows up. Sare convinces a reluctant Suze to embark on a road trip across Ireland to find their alcoholic father. Confined by the four walls of a crumbling ice cream van, it’s a baptism of fire for these sisters. They forge an unbreakable bond as they discover sometimes it’s the family you choose that can carry you through.

SERIES OVERVIEW
In the aftermath of her mother’s death, Sare (30s), deals with the shocking revelation of her father’s identity in the only way she knows how, with absolute pragmatism. She packs her copy of Ulysses – along with two scoops of hope and optimism – and flies across the pond to Ireland to track down her biological father.
Meanwhile, our Dubliner, Suze (30s), is also searching ….for her knickers. We meet her on the morning of her 37th birthday in a Dublin hotel room after spending the night with a man saved in her phone as ‘DO NOT CALL’. Suze has just discovered the rock has fallen out of her rock bottom and is dealing with it in the only way she knows how: total denial.
Once in Dublin, Sare arrives at the house of her biological father’s ex-wife, Sheryl (50s). Sheryl also happens to be Suze’s mother. As Sheryl walks her through an old photo album, she drops the bombshell that her daughter Suze is Sare’s half-sister.
Sare barely has a moment to process the information when Suze arrives, hungover, for her 37th birthday lunch. This is the first Suze has heard of Sare. The bewildering news of a half-sibling has opposing effects on the two women. Sare, the more culturally optimistic of the two, is ready to make the best of a complicated situation. Having no family left, she is longing for connection and a sense of history. Suze, who has been estranged from her father for twenty years, has no interest in this genetic discovery….initially.
Despite all the warning labels that her father, JIMMY (60s), is a ‘good-for-nothing alcoholic’, Sare is desperate to find him. She gets a tip that he is in Galway and uses the only power she has over Suze – money – to convince her to drive her there. Suze is adamant that there’s no chance in hell that she’s going to Galway, until she comes to the realisation that she has run out of options.

They hit the road in a beaten-up ice cream van where they meet a bevy of colourful characters who help them shed their veneers. They discover hard truths about themselves and each other. Sare is confronted with the facade that is her life, including her engagement to her long-term boyfriend STEVE (30s) and Suze has to face up to her own reality, after difficult choices were made in her recent past. With the wounds of childhood re-opened, the two women are forced into an unshakable bond through their shared experience. Their lives take irreversible turns as they let go of the past and walk toward the people they want to become.
