Breaking Trad open episode 2 in lively fashion with a set of tunes from box player Donal Murphy’s part of the world – Sally Slides. Chairman of the Fleadh Cheoil Executive Committee Joe Connaire took a timeout from the organising to join his wonderful students for a performance. Champions collide on the streets of Mullingar when Gradam Cheoil Ceoltóir na Bliana 2021 Angelina Carberry is joined by Dan Brouder on accordion and All-Ireland Sean Nós Dance Champion Ryan Owens who dances a fine step.
This year’s Fleadh has a distinctly international feel with students from all over the world coming to compete in the Fleadh competitions. Teachers Eimear Arkins and Eileen Gannon have brought a group from St Louis Irish Arts School in the USA. Fiddle player Eileen O’Brien tells Muireann about her family’s special connection with the Fleadh in Mullingar after playing Slieve na mBan and Dinny O’Brien’s Reel, a tune composed by her father as a tribute to his father and Eileen’s grandfather, Dinny O’Brien.
Kerry native Danny O’Mahony is joined by Mícheál O’Raghallaigh and MacDara O’ Raghallaigh. Muireann is at the Fleadh campsite to soak up the atmosphere and catch a performance by the Gradam Cheoil bursary recipients 2021 Sinéad Stockman, Sorcha McKenna & Brendan Kerr as the sun begins to set. The episode draws to a close with a rousing performance by Trad on the Prom with dancer Cathal Keaney.
