Tonight, Nationwide meets buyers of local produced craft and design, who have come to the RDS, to view some of the great products and garments produced in Ireland over the last year. Plus, the programme features the makers and designers to hear of their hopes for sales in 2023.

One small business who has benefitted hugely from being at Showcase is Shuttleknit, a knitwear company run by traveller women in Wicklow. Our reporter, Niall Martin has been to visit them to hear how it all began and to see the fashionable garments they produce.
WEARABLE ART/REPORT ZAINAB BOLADALE
Artists often have a signature style that they’re known for and one woman in County Meath is using her paintings to create wearable art. Our reporter, Zainab Boladale went to meet her as she was putting the finishing touches to her products which she is displaying at the Showcase expo at the RDS.

CORK PERSON OF THE YEAR – JOHN CREEDON
On tonight’s programme, veteran broadcaster John Creedon, who won Cork Person of the Year in 2021. He takes us to the places in Cork’s North inner city, where as a boy he sported, played and grew up and learned to appreciate and love all things Cork city. Plus, Nationwide looks ahead to The Cork person of Year Awards 2022 which will be announced this week.

Thirty years ago, Cork man Manus O’Callaghan started a yearly awards event in County Cork which was designed to celebrate and show appreciation to Cork people who stand out in different fields of endeavour, thus the Cork Person of the Year was born. We look back on these awards and find out about some of the many people nominated over the years.

Nationwide features people with a passion for the crafts of yesterday including a restorer of well known Kerry made furniture and a Blacksmith who is keeping the old ways alive in Meath.

As we are all still finding our way or creating new paths, post lockdown, one man in County Meath grabbed an opportunity with both hands to re-invent himself and become An Gobha, a Blacksmith. Recently Bláthnaid Ní Chofaigh went to meet him and to see his work.

In the 19th century, there were ten workshops in Killarney, producing elaborately-inlaid furniture using locally-sourced woods – including that of the Arbutus tree. Our reporter, Marian Malone has been to meet one man who is determined to preserve the legacy of Killarney Arbutus furniture.
