Episode 3: Into the Woods

Presenter: Duncan Stewart

Ireland’s first settlers came to an Island, 80% of which was covered in rich temperate rainforest, and it’s in these ancient woodlands that our first people began to build a civilisation. But over time, our natural forest cover was reduced to less than 1%. Now at 11% Ireland still has the lowest forestry cover in all of Europe.

If Ireland has any hope of reaching its climate and biodiversity goals, Ireland has to at least double the forestry cover it currently has. If achieved, this would be one of the most dramatic changes to Ireland’s landscape and to how land is used.
