Episode 10

Rural Abattoir
Drive through any rural town and you will see shuttered shop fronts. Small businesses like cafes,
pubs and butchers are all struggling to cope with soaring costs. But in Co. Louth, a second
generation butcher from Ardee, Michael Commins, is bucking that trend by reopening the
abattoir attached to the shop, which has been closed for nearly 20 years, in an effort to make his
business more sustainable.

Tomato
We all associate tomato growing with summer, but the season actually kicks off in the depths of winter.
Last December Helen Carroll travelled to Waterford to meet David Currid from Grantstown Nurseries as
he took delivery of 45,000 tomato plants. Once they land in the yard from the Netherlands, it’s a race
against time to get the young plants settled into their new home under a hectare of glass.

Dingle Hub
Ella Mc Sweeney travels to Kerry where she meets a dairy farmer and a sheep farmer, who are working as
part of a local hub trying to add value to the food they produce, while at the same time lowering their
emissions.
