NATIONWIDE WEEK 2

MONDAY 9TH JANUARY 

PROGRAMME ON THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR

Nationwide visits the United States to discover the history of what has been described as Ireland’s forgotten war – the American Civil War.  Some 200,000 Irish took part in that war, on both the Union and Confederate sides.  The programme hears some of their stories and looks at one of the War’s bloodiest battles, in which many of them lost their lives. 

WEDNESDAY 11TH JANUARY

MACGILLYCUDDY & CRAZY HORSE PROGRAMME

On this evening’s show Nationwide travels to South Dakota and discovers how the son of Irish immigrants,  Dr. Valentine MacGillycuddy, played a central role in the history of the early American West and became known to native American Indians as a friend to their Sioux leader, Crazy Horse. 

FRIDAY 13TH JANUARY 

PROGRAMME ON THE MACGILLYCUDDY REEKS & THE BLACK VALLEY 

Nationwide visits the Kerry Reeks that bear the name of the MacGillycuddy family and discover that family’s history. The programme also hears about the work being carried out to manage an influx of some 200,000 visitors a year to these mountains and their wild landscape.
