Galway Wool
We’ve been told for years that Irish Wool has little or no
value, and indeed it costs sheep farmers more to have their
flocks sheared every summer, than they can ever hope to get
for the fleeces their animals produce. But in Galway, one
woman is doing her level best to change all that. Blatnaid
Gallagher has set up the Galway Wool Co Op with other local
farmers to ensure the best price for the wool, from their
sheep. Helen Carroll spent the day at Athenry Mart where
the group was holding its second Meitheal as farmers from
all over the country gathered to have this year’s wool weighed and valued.

Bia Sol
The Circular Economy is a real talking point these days.
But how do you make something new, and of value, out
of something that others are essentially throwing away?
Well one enterprising brother and sister are doing just
that when it comes to spent grain from the brewing
industry. Darragh Mc Cullough meets Niamh and Ruairi
Dooley from a new start up company called Bia Sol, who
have teamed up with farmer and beer maker Maurice
Deasy from Canvas Brewing to give his heritage barley a
new life after he has finished with it.

Martin Neary
Martin Neary was born on a 7 acre farmstead in
Mayo. An only child Martin, he worked here with his
mother his whole life. Now retired and with no
natural successor he bequeathed the land to Mayo
County Council to plant as a native woodland park for
the whole community to enjoy.
But it comes with one caveat – Martin wants to stay
with the land and has to be buried here.
Welcome to “Martin Neary Woodland Park”.
