IRISH EXPLORATION STORIES 

Programme commemorating two of Ireland’s and the World’s greatest explorers.  Nationwide takes a tour of the Marine Institute’s new exploration vessel, named after Kerry man, Tom Crean.  Plus, Nationwide meets the team behind a stage production which tells the story of Kildare man, Earnest Shackleton and his exploration journeys to distant and remote parts of the Globe. 

SHACKLETON MUSIC/REPORT ANNE CASSIN 

Athy, in County Kildare, is the homeplace of Irish explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, who was born and spent his early years in Kilkea.   The people of Kildare are rightly proud of their local hero, and in a work called South! Always South, which celebrates Shackleton’s roots, his life and his Antarctic exploits. 

TOM CREAN VESSEL/REPORT RIVERSIDE TV 

A few weeks ago in County Kerry, The Marine Institue, launched its new exploration research vessel named after local man and explorer, Tom Crean.   We were in Daingean Uí Chúis for the launch, to find out about the Ship and the work it will do around the Irish coast and to meet a descendant of Tom Crean.

REBUILDING THE HOMESTEAD

Nationwide has stories of old cottages and their restoration as we meet two people who undertook projects to restore their old ancestral family cottages in the country in Counties Mayo and Longford.

THE KILLIAN HOMEPLACE, COUNTY LONGFORD/REPORT NIALL MARTIN 

In rural County Longford, not far from the town of Lanesborough, there’s a story of belonging and re-discovering roots.  Businesswoman Joan Killian Gallagher lives in Connecticut in United States but the homeplace of her family in Co Longford has always been her passion. Our reporter, Niall Martin met Joan and her family on their first post Covid visit back to the homeplace where he learned all about the family and their restoration project.

TERRY’S COTTAGE, COUNTY MAYO/REPORT BLÁTHNAID NÍ CHOFAIGH 

Binghamstown is a small village in North County Mayo.  It’s a picturesque location and homeplace of Michael Togher.  Michael is a singer who during the pandemic lock downs began the process of restoring his late Uncle Terry’s Cottage near his home outside the village.  During the Summer, Bláthnaid Ní Chofaigh went to see the cottage and to hear of the history of the family and of the village.

DESIGN WEEK PROGRAMME

The Design and Crafts Council of Ireland organise Design Week every year, in advance of this year’s week from 13th to the 20th of November, we meet designers and students who have designs on a career in the rag trade.  

CIRCULAR BY DESIGN/REPORT NIALL MARTIN

Moving from student to professional designer is never an easy task and to help with this transition the Creative Futures Academy at NCAD and Design & Crafts Council Ireland have collaborated on a professional pilot training programme called Circular by Design.  Twelve companies have been chosen to participate in the pilot programme which will help them make this transition. 

NATIONAL COLLEGE OF ART & DESIGN/REPORT ZAINAB BOLADALE 

We are at the National College of Art and Design which has been in operation since 1971 and today has a number of upcoming designers attending college.  Our reporter Zainab Boladale has the story.
