Sports journalist Joanne O’Riordan has always fought for the underdog. As a wheelchair user, she may not be able to play herself, but she has always had a passion for sport. She writes on women’s sport for The Irish Times and is a disability activist. She has spent years watching, analysing, roaring and shouting for good sport at all levels and for all.

In this documentary, Joanne looks at the political, physical and financial issues facing women in the sporting arena.

Joanne meets Sinéad Reel and some of the Armagh women’s team who are building their own training facilities.

She talks to All-Star Tyrone footballer Conor Meyler to hear his view on the amalgamation of the male and female organisations that make up Gaelic games. Conor is doing a PhD in sport leadership and gender.

Joanne meets with former Ireland rugby captain Fiona Steed, clinical psychologist Ian Robertson, Doctor Ciara Losty who works with Horse Racing Ireland and Doctor Caitriona Cormican who plays camogie for Galway. All contribute to Joanne’s exploration of what it means to be a female athlete in this country.

As Amy Broadhurst prepares for a chance of gold at the European Boxing Championships, she talks of her route to a world championships, her friendship with Katie Taylor and the unwavering support of her parents.

Dublin footballer and former Ireland rugby player Hannah Tyrrell talks about the importance of sport in her life and the mental difficulties she’s been through with body image and self harm.

Referee and linesperson Michelle O’Neill has performed at the Olympics, Champions League and Euros ’22. Wexford woman Michelle, is on the lines for Dundalk vs St. Patrick’s Athletics and reflects on why the sidelines are the place for her.
