MONDAY 24TH OCTOBER

RING OF BEARA PROGRAMME

In this Nationwide special Anne Cassin drives around the 140km Ring of Beara from Glengarriff in Co Cork to Kenmare in Co Kerry.  In Castletownbere she learns about the importance of fishing to the area and drops into MacCarthy’s Bar.  Further along the loop she visits the first Tibetan Buddhist Temple at Dzogchen Beara and chats to Peter Cornish, the man who came to Ireland 50 years ago with the dream of setting up the West Cork Buddhist retreat.  In Allihies, Tadgh O Sullivan tells Anne about the history of copper mining in the area and she meets a couple who swapped the rat race in Brussels for a quieter life in this rural West Cork village almost 20 years ago.  In Eyries, Eoghan Daltun tells his story of how he discovered his very own Atlantic temperate rainforest.

COMMUNITY TIDY TOWNS PROGRAMME 

On this evening’s programme we visit some of the 800 communities who entered the Super Valu Tidy Towns competition 2022, in advance of this Friday’s national awards presentation at the RDS in Dublin.  Bláthnaid begins her journey in Ennis, the overall winner of the 2021 competition and she finds out about what kind of year it has been and how they won last year.  Plus, she gets some tips for other communities entered in the 2022 competition.  

KILKENNY & TIPPERARY TIDY TOWNS/REPORT MARY FANNING 

We are going on a journey to visit locations and people whose hard work and efforts over the years have brought success, pride and have enhanced their village and towns land.  Our first report is from Mary Fanning who has been to rural counties Tipperary and Kilkenny where she meets volunteers in Kilsheelan in County Tipperary and Tullahought and Listerlin in County Kilkenny. 

COUNTY WEXFORD TIDY TOWNS/REPORT BLÁTHNAID NÍ CHOFAIGH 

We travel the highways and byways to meet volunteers in some of the 800 communities who have entered Tidy Towns 2022.  Recently, Bláthnaid Ní Chofaigh was in County Wexford to visit some of this year’s entries including Rosslare Harbour and Kilmuckridge.
