Neven Maguire is back with a brand new six part series of his popular Food Trails programmes, and this year his travels take him from Faro in the South of Portugal to the Douro Valley in the North of the country.

Final programme: The Douro Valley

In the final episode of Neven’s Portuguese Food Trails, the popular chef travels to the Douro Valley in the North of Portugal, a UNESCO World Heritage region renowned for its wine production.

Neven’s first stop is the historic town of Lamego which is home to Escola de Hotelaria e Turismo, a leading culinary and hospitality college. Here Neven meets Tutor and Executive Chef Alexandre Ferreira and many of the young students training to be chefs. The students prepare an impressive outdoor, wood-fired banquet for Neven and he is treated to a tasting of traditional local dishes.

Neven then boards a train at Pinhão Station for a picturesque journey along the River Douro. Pinhão Station was built in the 19th century and is famous for its beautiful tiled facades which depict scenes from the local Port wine industry.

Neven travels on to the Quinta Nova Winery and Hotel, a converted 19th century manor house located high up on the mountainside overlooking the Douro Valley. Here he enjoys a wine tasting of Quinta Nova’s wines and learns what makes wines from the Douro Valley unique.

He also meets André Carvalho, Head Chef of the hotel’s restaurant Terraçu’ who shares a recipe with ingredients from the Douro area.
Neven prepares Seafood Rice for his final recipe of the series.

Neven’s Portuguese Food Trails is produced and directed by David Hare for InproductionTV and is sponsored by FLOGAS
