Takeaway Titans – the search for Ireland’s best takeaway

Ireland’s takeaway scene has exploded over the last few years – traditionally a space for fish and chips, Irish customers can enjoy delicious food from every corner of the globe in their very own sitting room.

Takeaway Titans is the show that seeks out the best takeaway talent and puts them to the test to see who comes out on top.

Hosted by James Kavanagh and Carl Mullan, top takeaway chefs from Ireland’s best Chippers, Asian, Indian, Pizza and Burger and Chicken joints, come to the Takeaway Titans Kitchen to cook up a storm for our discerning judges.

Irish chef and renowned critic Dylan McGrath and takeaway expert and winner of Britain’s Best Home Cook Suzie Lee Arbuthnot, will judge the takeaway teams based on their creativity and skill – they are looking for delicious food and nothing less will do.

Top Irish celebrities join the judges to taste some of the food – guests include Deirdre O’Kane, Hugh Wallace, Norma Sheehan, Jake Carter and Rory O’Connor aka Rory’s Stories.

The six-part series is made up of 5 heat episodes and one final. Each themed heat will see three takeaway teams cook their best selling dishes, some fantasy takeaway dishes and a judges mystery challenge to keep them on their toes.

At the end of three challenges one team will make it through to the final.

The five final teams return to the Takeaway Titans kitchen and must choose one dish from there menu and cook not just for Dylan and Suzie, but for the toughest judges of them all – the public.

Who will deliver the most delicious food? Takeaway Titans starts on the 8th of September at 9.35pm on RTÉ2.

Episode 5 INDIAN

SPICE COTTAGE (SALLYNOGGIN, CO.DUBLIN)

CONTESTANTS: SUKHDEEP KAUR (SUH) AND RAJESH SHARMA

Suh’s father, Harry, opened Spice Cottage in 2001, and worked 6 days a week with his wife building up their reputation for authentic Indian food. Suh stepped in in 2009 to help her parents during the recession.  Her husband, Gill came onboard in 2011.  And in 2017 Sue and Gill took over Spice Cottage.

Harry has trained many of the staff on cooking authentic Indian food. Since Rajesh joined Spice Cottage last year, the team have said they have learnt so much from him.

Rajesh has 14 years’ experience in hospitality in India, and loves creating new dishes for the menu at Spice Cottage. Spice Cottage rely on word of mouth, and this has stood to them for the last 21 years.

Harry was known to give customers the odd freebie, especially if he knew his customers might be having a hard time. Suh has maintained that customer service relationship.  Even going so far as to leaving her personal mobile number for customers to call her if they have any complaints.  She takes customer feedback incredibly seriously. If she hasn’t seen a customer in a while, she may even call them to make sure that they’re alright.

The food in Spice Cottage is cooked fresh, they make their own sauces, and don’t use any preservatives.  Suh believes in keeping the food healthy.

DOSA DOSA (CO. DUBLIN)
CONTESTANTS: KARTHIK THIRU AND PRASAD SANIL

Karthik Thiru set up Dosa Dosa in 2020. He was working as a senior software technician in Dublin, but he really wanted to follow his passion, cooking authentic South Indian food.

Karthik is originally for the town Thanjavour, in the Southern region of Tamil Nadu. He likes to correct people who refer to his food as Indian, as being South Indian food.

When he came to Ireland, he missed the food from home and couldn’t find any Indian restaurants that specifically had Southern dishes on the menu. In February 2020, Karthik took the plunge and set up his own takeaway business focusing on the southern dish, the dosa pancake.

The pandemic briefly interrupted business, by May 2020, he was back serving his popular dosa’s. The first year in business he maintained his full time job, Monday to Friday, working on his takeaway business all hours outside of his IT job.

After an incredibly successful first year, Karthik was able to quit his IT job and focus soley on Dosa Dosa.

The Dosa is a really healthy dish, that is naturally gut friendly, gluten free and can be vegan/vegetarian.

Prasad came to work with Karthik last November, and was immediately taken in by Karthik’s passion for South Indian food. Prasad refers to the accompaniments on the menu, the sambar and vada as the sidekicks. They say that the dosa is the superhero, but without the sidekicks there is no movie!

Karthik’s recipes are his mother’s, and he keeps them a secret.

INDIAN SPICE KITCHEN (DOUGLAS, CO. CORK)

CONTESTANTS: JESSILY PANICKER AND DINEESH JOHN

Jessily Panicker opened Indian Spice Kitchen in March 2022. Indian Spice Kitchen is run from an Indian food shop beside their premises. Already it has become incredibly popular with the South Indian community in Cork who are looking for food that reminds them of home.

Jessily has her hands full working as a Director of Nursing and being a single parent to three boys.  But her passion for good, authentic home cooked Indian food brought her into the takeaway business.

In Indian Spice Kitchen they mostly focus on South Indian Food, particularly from the Kerala region. Jessily says that there is nowhere else in Cork offering the food she does.

She firmly believes in keeping the ingredients fresh, even going so far as to avoid using tinned tomatoes. In the past when Jessily wanted to destress from her nursing job, when she got home she would put on music, and cook dishes from home for her three boys.

She believes she has brought that element to Indian Spice Kitchen, that the best thing about it is it’s home cooking. Dinesh is her challenge partner. Jessily says that they make great team because of their shared love for cooking.  She says that Dinesh makes curry just like her mother use to.
