Two French composers share the spotlight this Sunday, but they couldn’t be more different. Jean Phillipe Rameau was born on this day in 1683 and his fame often stems from his opera, keyboard and instrumental works, but today we’ll include his other two main outputs: motets and cantatas. Our other ‘composer du jour’ is Gautier de Coincy, who was in all respects a trouvère – that North French flavour of troubadour – but whose object of devotion was none other than the Virgin Mary. We’ll hear several of the recordings that have brought Coincy’s music to life since the 1970s, and there will be a few special inserts of similar Marian devotional music from the middle ages: Cantigas de Santa Maria and Italian ‘laude’. Recordings by Alla Francesca, The Harp Consort, Les Arts Florissants and Hesperion XXI/Le Concert de Nations are all part of this Sunday’s Vox Nostra.
