Nationwide looks ahead to the National Ploughing Championships in County Laois and hears about plans for this three-day event which gets underway tomorrow. This year’s event is special as it’s the first in two years following Covid and because this year, it’s not just the National event but the International Ploughing Championships which are being held in Ireland.
The event is huge and during the three days there are hundreds of stands and small competitions held, one of those is a Brown Bread baking championship and Bláthnaid recently went along to a qualifying heat. Bláthnaid also visited the site at Ratheniska where the work of building the infrastructure for this event was well underway and met with Anna May McHugh, a person who has dedicated many hours to the National Ploughing Championships and is currently the General Secretary of the World Ploughing Organisation, she tells us all about this year’s Championships.

An event such as the Ploughing Championships is an opportunity for the County to show off what it has to offer the visitor and our reporter, Colm Flynn has been to see some attractions of County Laois.
DUBLIN HORSE SHOW/REPORT MARY FANNING
Last month, the Dublin Horse Show took place after a long break with Covid and the event that brings urban and rural together for a week in the City came alive again. It’s a week when friends, horsemen and women and come together and showcase the best horses, food and fashion at the Dublin 4 venue. Mary Fanning went to meet some competitors and exhibitors who are now looking forward to the other great rural event, the National and World Ploughing Championships.
