Takeaway Titans – the search for Ireland’s best takeaway

Ireland’s takeaway scene has exploded over the last few years – traditionally a space for fish and chips, Irish customers can enjoy delicious food from every corner of the globe in their very own sitting room.

Takeaway Titans is the show that seeks out the best takeaway talent and puts them to the test to see who comes out on top.

Hosted by James Kavanagh and Carl Mullan, top takeaway chefs from Ireland’s best Chippers, Asian, Indian, Pizza and Burger and Chicken joints, come to the Takeaway Titans Kitchen to cook up a storm for our discerning judges.

Irish chef and renowned critic Dylan McGrath and takeaway expert and winner of Britain’s Best Home Cook Suzie Lee Arbuthnot, will judge the takeaway teams based on their creativity and skill – they are looking for delicious food and nothing less will do.

Top Irish celebrities join the judges to taste some of the food – guests include Deirdre O’Kane, Hugh Wallace, Norma Sheehan, Jake Carter and Rory O’Connor aka Rory’s Stories.

The six-part series is made up of 5 heat episodes and one final. Each themed heat will see three takeaway teams cook their best selling dishes, some fantasy takeaway dishes and a judges mystery challenge to keep them on their toes.

At the end of three challenges one team will make it through to the final.

The five final teams return to the Takeaway Titans kitchen and must choose one dish from there menu and cook not just for Dylan and Suzie, but for the toughest judges of them all – the public.

Who will deliver the most delicious food? Takeaway Titans starts on the 8th of September at 9.35pm on RTÉ2.

Episode 1 – Beef/ Chicken

In the first episode of Takeaway Titans James and Carl meet the first three contenders for the Takeaway Titans title- Hey Chick from Belfast, Poulet Vous from Cork and Sambros from Cork. Who will win a spot in the final? Judges Dylan McGrath and Suzie Lee along with guest judge Rory O’ Connor put the chefs through their paces.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THE TAKEAWAY CONTESTANTS IN EPISODE 1.

HEY CHICK! (BELFAST, CO. ANTRIM)

CONTESTANTS: JOE GOUDY AND MARK CRAIG

Hey Chick came out of “covid”, when Joe and Mark finally had a break in their hectic work lives in hospitality. Many hours were spent on park benches talking about their shared dream of having their own takeaway. And so they set about creating an ambitious business plan.

The original incarnation of Hey Chick was a pop up takeaway. It was great opportunity to test out their now popular Buffalo Fried Chicken Burger. They cater for alot of allergies and bespoke customer requests…they have created all their own recipes from scratch and keep developing new ideas…the queues at the takeaway are testament to their success!

Mark and Joe say that they have tried every burger around Ireland, in an attempt to make sure that their burger is the best.

Mark runs a drinks company on the side and Joe runs a gym.

At the beginning of planning their burger, they would have lengthy meetings on how to build the best burger. Deciding on where the coleslaw came in the construction of the burger took up a 3 hour meeting alone. Mark and Joe would describe Hey Chick as being a “sexy”, “high energy” brand.

When they started their deliveries during lockdown, they also supplied a QR code which brought their customers to the Hey Chick playlist. So people could appreciate the Hey Chick vibe, as they ate their burgers at home.

POULET VOUS (CORK CITY, CO. CORK)

CONTESTANTS: CAMERON THORNTON AND AIDAN ROCHE

Poulet-Vous is owned by chef Aidan Roche, his challenge partner is Cameron Thornton. It is based in the Marina Market in Cork, and has been running since 23rd of May 2021. Aidan has worked in Michelin star restaurants in Cork and Canada. He returned from Canada in December 2019 for his brother’s wedding, and a visit.

But Covid grounded him, and he found himself out of work and living back with his parents. He had a few difficult months, but then struck on the idea of starting up his own business. And so the concept of Poulet-Vouz was born. His brother helped him come up with the name, inspired by the Abba song. His first weekend open, the queue was 45minutes long. And people were happy to wait. It wasn’t long before he had to buy more fridges to help store the extra food he needed.

Poulet-Vous has a mission a to prove that “take away-fast food” can be an extremely good experience if executed properly, both for those who work in the industry, and of course for their customers.

They cook a multitude of chicken dishes ranging from burgers to bao buns to pitta breads. At Poulet-Vous, they pride themselves in delivering quality wholesome dishes above all else. They give themselves a daily limited number of portions to sell even if the demand is higher than the actual food available. This allows them to ensure quality across the board from the very first order to last order of the day.

Everything is cooked to order, and cooked from scratch; pickles, coleslaw and sauces. The most popular order is the bao bun, and second to that is the pitta bread. Poulet-Vouz has been so successful, Aidan is now wondering what is next for the business….perhaps a restaurant.

SAMBROS (LIMERICK CITY, CO. LIMERICK)

CONTESTANTS: GARY HUYNH AND ADAM O’BRIEN

Sambros is run by head chef, Gary Huyah and is helped by his great friend, Adam.

Gary moved to Limerick from London at the age of 8. He returned to London when he was 21 to work as a chef in fine dining and Michelin Star restaurants for 7 years. He always wanted to move back to Limerick, and on a visit home he saw an opportunity to start up his own place. So he moved back permanently in 2016.

Gary’s’ work in a smoke house in London has really influenced his burgers. Sambros believes that really good food should be accessible, and shouldn’t break the bank. They always knew that there was a way to make takeaway food, good quality, fresh and flavoursome.

Gary makes his own sauces, and describes his Cajun mayo as being “a bit out there”.

They only use fresh ingredients, the bread is the only thing he orders in.

In 2020 a fire broke out in the laneway behind their takeaway. In tribute to that he created a new sandwich, the Flaming Lane…Which is now one of their best sellers. The Southern Feels burger is their best seller. This has mac’ n cheese, fried chicken and smoked bacon on it. Sambros is really interested in butchery, and believes in zero waste when it comes to meat.

Both Gary and Adam grew up around food. Gary’s parents ran a restaurant in Limerick.

He says that his favourite food above everything else, is his mother’s cooking. Since opening in 2019 some of his loyal customers have become friends, and supporters of Sambros.
