Beautiful Biber: This Sunday on Vox Nostra, an exploration of one of the composers who is moderately well-known to audiences today, thanks to his exquisite sonatas for violin. Less known, perhaps, are his large-scale works, and we’ll get to hear several of those magnificent oeuvres, especially one of the extravagantly-orchestrated masses which he wrote for the cathedral in Salzburg.  For no fewer than 53-parts, it is perhaps the largest-scale Baroque work on record, comparable to Tallis’ ‘Spem in Alium’ or Mahler’s 8th, the ‘Symphony of a Thousand’. But we’ll also enjoy his smaller-scale works, and of course, the Sunday Sonata returns in August with the gorgeousness of Biber’s best-known violin works, the Rosary Sonatas.
