With the new partnership of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II came fully integrated musical theatre. No longer so much the storehouse of harmonic or melodic opportunity that appealed so strongly to jazzers, the sequence of shows that started with Oklahoma nonetheless yielded many enduring and exciting songs both within and beyond the purely theatrical context.
