PROGRAMME 3: HealthTech

The HIVE Lab
This episode explores 21st century medicine and we meet patients who are benefiting from new
advances in technology. We visit NUI Galway to meet an MIT alumnus Professor Derek O’Keefe who
leads a lab that is creating a range of engineering and robotics solutions to solve his patients’ difficult
medical conditions. We follow Derek and his design team as they produce a wearable sensor device that
will replace a white cane for Diabetes patient Sinead Curtis, which will help her navigate the streets of
Galway.

Neureka App for Mental Health and Compulsive behaviour
At the home of the Global Brain Health institute in Trinity College Dublin, we meet Professor Claire
Gillan who is combining mobile technology with citizen science to help create a clearer picture of
people’s mental health. The Neureka App is tipped to help thousands of people with compulsive
behaviours. The lads at Monaghan Rugby club are amongst the first users of the App’s Pattern Wise
feature that tracks behaviour and inputs the information into a data pool which will help diagnose and
potentially treat compulsive behaviour.
