Beginning with the historical and sociological background of 17th century England where it first found expression as an English ballad of sobriety and temperance the documentary traces the course of it’s 300 + year old existence and charts the often surprising story of how it went on to travel the world and eventually become what is today regarded as the Irish drinking song par excellence. Based on the work of folksong scholar Brian Peters, it features performances by contemporary singers and musicians.
