Airing as part of Science Week on RTÉ

Exactly one year ago, the first Covid 19 vaccines were approved.  A year is a long time in science.  What will the next year bring?  Future Island, airing across three nights during Science Week on RTÉ, returns to attempt a look ahead.

At the centre of it all is the unique partnership of Liz Bonnin and Professor Luke O’Neill.

Liz is a science, natural history and environmental broadcaster with a passion for natural science but a fascination in how science affects every aspect of our lives. Professor Luke O’Neill brings his unique insight and incredible talent for explaining complex ideas for the ordinary person.

Completing the trio is science communicator Phil Smyth who will be back to create controlled mayhem as he actively tackles the theory with the practical.

Future Island will be a mix of live studio guests, entertainment and short pieces filmed across the country to inform and entertain you on the huge kaleidoscope that is science.   We will reveal the science fact from the science fiction and look at how Irish innovators are changing the world.

Guests include physicist and former musician Brian Cox, Home School hub presenter Emer O’Neill, comedian and lapsed engineer Colm O’Regan, meteorologist Ger Fleming and marine scientist and author Finn Van De Aer.

From the sporting arena Future Island will welcome the Olympic bronze medallists – the women’s four rowing team made up of Aifric Keogh, Eimear Lambe, Fiona Murtagh and Emily Hegarty – as well as rugby legend Donncha O’Callaghan.

Future Island will be broadcast live from Explorium, Dublin’s sport and science centre in Sandyford.

RTÉ ONE, 7pm on Tuesday 9th, Wednesday 10th, Thursday 11th November.
