FRIDAY 5TH NOVEMBER
On this evening’s programme, presented by Bláthnaid Ní Chofaigh, Nationwide focus on some trail blazing Irish women, sharing stories from HerStory, of the first Irish woman to become a Vet, another a Barrister and the third, a Ship’s Captain. Pioneering Irishwoman, Aleen Cust was the first woman to study veterinary in Ireland or the UK at the Veterinary College in Edinburgh. She qualified in 1900 and it was an Irish vet who allowed her practise in Roscommon, but it was 1922 before she was admitted to the male dominated register and given the title MRCVS. She paved the way for those who would follow. She’s relatively unknown outside veterinary circles and a committee has been established in the West of Ireland to commemorate her and honour her trail blazing path. Mary Fanning retraced the story of this extraordinary woman.
