GLOW UP IRELAND
Pout… Pose… Sparkle… Shimmer… Shine! Glow Up Ireland, presented by TV star, model and influencer Maura Higgins will air on RTÉ2 from 9:35pm on Thursday September 2nd. This is not just make up. It’s art. It’s time … to Glow Up!
Glow Up Ireland is a competitive factual entertainment series where ten of Ireland’s best amateur make-up artists (MUAs) are challenged in a range of assignments where they will show off their technical know-how, skill, artistry and imagination. They will be tasked with creating amazing make-up transformations – all taking place in a dedicated studio space – Glow Up HQ. One of the ten will be crowned Ireland’s Next Make-Up Star and will win a fantastic opportunity to further their professional career.
The two judges putting the 10 make up artists through their paces will be industry professionals Cathyanne Mac Allister and Emma O’ Byrne. With over 35 years experience Cathyanne has worked with massive design houses including Christian Dior, John Galliano, Roberto Cavalli, Givenchy and Dolce and Gabbana, along with countless editorials with Vogue, Harpers Bazaar and literally thousands of Fashion Week shows. Emma has been working as a make-up artist for 20 years. She has travelled the world working with Charlotte Tilbury on shows including Victoria Secret, Tom Ford, Victoria Beckham and Donna Karen in New York as well as the likes of Gucci, Chloe and Versace. Having been backstage at the wedding of George and Amal Clooney Emma went on to work on the British Royal wedding making up both Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie and has done several other Royal weddings.
EPISODE 1 of 8
The theme for the first episode is fashion. Celebrity Fashion Designer Colin Horgan is the guest judge for the first episode. Originally from Kerry Colin has been worn by Lady Gaga, Dua Lipa, Halsey, Rita Ora, Nicki Minaj and many more celebrities.
For the first Industry Challenge Colin has chosen ten different looks from his upcoming SS22 season launching 17th September at London Fashion Week and the MUAs must create an editorial look considering the complete outfit and brief which they have been assigned by Colin.
The winning look will feature in a fashion editorial in Stellar magazine and the winner also gets the opportunity to recreate their look at Colin’s studio in Kerry and have it filmed as part of his launch video for London Fashion Week. (LFW is a virtual event again this year.)
For the make up artists’ Creative Challenge this week the theme is “Uniquely You.” Colin is regarded as an icon of the Fashion Industry with a very clear identity and style that is recognisable on any catwalk across the world. The make up artists are challenged to define “What is your iconic look? This first creative challenge is to create a bold look that clearly demonstrates to the judges and audience at home what makes these 10 MUAs unique.

Further information on the Glow Up series format here:
Glow Up Ireland is an established format, produced first for BBC Three (also successfully playing on BBC One) by Wall To Wall and now produced in territories like Norway, New Zealand and the Netherlands. It is represented internationally by Warner Bros. The Irish series will be produced by Indiepics, whose credits include The Style Counsellors, How To Be Good With Money, Big Week On The Farm, Ireland On Call, Ear To The Ground, Keeping Ireland Alive and ICA Bootcamp.
Each episode of Glow Up Ireland contains two themed challenges – a professional brief and a creative brief. The professional brief will involve a guest judge and will be based on the work of professional Make Up Artists – for example red carpet; catwalk; editorial; movie prosthetics; drag; theatre; advertising. The creative brief will, as the name suggests, test the creativity and interpretation skills of the MUAs.
The two worst performers in the professional brief find themselves in the Red Chairs in the second challenge, facing extra pressure, extra scrutiny and potentially a time penalty. Depending on how they perform they will either Beat The Seat and survive or lose out and go into the Face Off. Just two MUAs enter the final elimination Face-Off round, going head to head to fight for their place in the competition. The Face Off challenges are based on key skills such as ‘a perfect lip’ or ‘a winged liner’ and are carried out on models, enabling the judges to compare the looks. Only one can return to the competition and the Face Off decides which MUA will pack up their kit and leave immediately, based on the judges’ decision.
