“Four players are gathered around a table. Illuminated by waning candlelight: books, a lute, a dagger, wine in a chalice, gold and silver coins, and scattered between them the twenty-two ‘triomphes’ of the tarot, as it was printed in Paris around 1620…” So begins ‘Tarot de Paris’, a book and CD project by Lukas Henning, lute & theorbo player–as well as producer of early music video essays and vlogs. In this richly decorated book and excellent companion CD, Henning explores the music of composers Vallet, Dowland, Galilei, and Kapsberger, musicians who likely never met but whose music was transformed by each. Lukas Henning joins Vlad on this morning’s programme to explore the many ways in which each composer influenced their contemporaries and successive generations, transforming and reinterpreting music and themes–not too differently from how the Tarot hand is reinterpreted by each person who deals the cards.
