Episode 4

Presented by Pól O Conghaile and featuring Dr. Denis Shine, Michael Brazzill, Deirdre O’Flynn.

Beginning in Ferrycarrig in Co. Wexford, Pól traces a route that’s full of stories and spans over ten thousand years of Ireland’s history.  This is an inland walk in Wexford where Pól will encounter reconstructions of pre-christian Ireland, walking through real relics of Norman history from the 12thcentury and encountering the famous 1798 revolution sites.

At the start of the route Pól takes a slight detour to the Wexford Heritage Park to meet archaeologist Dr Denis Shine, of the Irish Archaeological Field School for a quick lesson on the local history and what he can expect to encounter. Leaving the Heritage park and Ferrycarrig behind Pól follows the historic Three Rocks Trail, and here the walk starts in earnest.  A quick diversion takes Pól into St Alphonsus Church in Barntown, the quintessential village church.

As the route slowly ascends Pól is walking through time, so far he has seen early Irish and Viking settlements, Norman towers and now gets to 1798, as the three rocks trail takes in two important 1798 sites.

He meets Michael Brazzill, who helped establish these trails and whose knowledge of 1798 history in this area helps Pól to imagine exactly what took place along the trail.

Series Information

Tracks & Trails is back for a 9th series and is bursting with beautiful hikes, walks and cycles on newly developed and lesser travelled routes on the island of Ireland.  In this new series which returns after a two year break, the presenters are challenged to cover a lot of ground on foot or by bike and in some cases scale some steep yet very rewarding trails on hills and mountains around the country or to follow quiet, meandering peaceful paths getting away from it all.

In series 9, Tracks & Trails will bring the viewer across spectacular mountain and cliff side trails in Northern Ireland; along inland cycle trails, forest, parkland and ancient paths of Westmeath; new and challenging routes that cross the hills of South Wicklow and the breathtaking coastline and mountains of North Wicklow; along ancient paths soaked in history of North Co Wexford, as well as along the magical beaches and bohreens around Rosslare in Co.Wexford in the final programme.
