MONDAY 24TH MAY – CUSTOM HOUSE, DUBLIN PROGRAMME

One hundred years ago this week, the IRA launched a major attack on one of the country’s most architecturally important and iconic buildings, the Custom House in Dublin.  Donal Byrne brings us the history of the building and the story of the fire and the battle that ensued after the IRA attack, in which 80 IRA men were arrested.  He also discovers the story of the youngest victim of that attack, a 17-year-old boy who has heretofore only been known as “The Boy in the Photograph”.

WEDNESDAY 26TH MAY – AFRICA DAY PROGRAMME

On this evening’s programme we celebrate Africa Day which took place yesterday.  We meet the current Miss Galway Pamela Uba and we hear stories of the African experience in Ireland – good and bad.
AFRICAN CHURCH/REPORT EAMON HORAN: Religion plays an important role in the lives of many Africans living in Ireland.  With vocations to the priesthood down now, priests from across the African continent particularly Nigeria have settled here and contribute much to Catholic parishes around the country.  For others, such as the Redeemed Christian Church of God, their weekly services & the sense of community forged by their Church contributes much to their sense of African identity.
