Series 2, Episode 4
BREXIT
Brexit dominated the headlines until the pandemic stopped Europe in its tracks. The impact of the UK leaving the EU will be felt for generations, none more so than in Ireland. Yet in midst of the political turmoil, lies potential opportunities for Irish businesses.
We’ll explore how extra paperwork is lucrative for one custom agent, yet a nightmare for truck drivers on a strict deadline. Brexit now means many companies are skipping trade with the UK completely. At Rosslare Europort, their staff have introduced new shipping routes to keep up with the growing demand for direct journeys to France, Germany and Spain.
Post-Brexit, many of us are still wondering if it will be plaining sailing for Irish businesses or if there might still be some economic storm clouds gathering on the horizon.
NIGHTLIFE
Ireland’s nightlife has been effectively closed from March 2020. Venues across the country were already struggling, thanks to outdated licensing laws, rising rents and property developers shutting down popular venues. There are an estimated 450 nightclubs and music venues in Ireland, employing thousands of people, many of whom remain without any work.
With no option to dance, laugh or sing, struggling creatives across Ireland are coming up with new ways to support themselves.
We’ll meet the DJs teaching the art of music mixing online; drag queens hosting Zoom dating shows; and the comedians learning how to go viral.
