The competition began with sixteen families now only eight remain. Across the next two weeks four families will take each other on in each episode with one family going home each week leaving just six families to battle it out in the semi-final in the SWAMP.

In the first leg of the quarter finals this week sees Davy is competing with the Mahoneys from wexford, Anna is competing with the Doyles from Derry and Derval is competing with both the Cullens also from Wexford and the Mileys from Meath

Here’s how the quarter finals work. The 4 families will take on a brand new event called Pontoons of Pain as well as an iconic Ireland’s Fittest Family event, Hanging Tough.

The families will be allocated points in each of these events  4 for the win, 3 for second place 2 for third and 1  point for fourth place. The points are added together and the top 2 qualify to the semi- final and the other 2 face off in an eliminator for the final place in the semi-finals.

EVENT ONE: PONTOONS OF PAIN

Pontoons of Pain is a double nominated head to head relay race between all 4 families. It starts with a slide into the water and a swim to the pontoons where they face a pathway moving with the water. The family members take on a balance beam also moving to break their stride, if they fall they go back to the start of the beam. Then the families face 4 pontoon jumps, if they splash off they have to go back to where the pontoon jumps start. Then it’s onto 3 submerged mats. They pull themselves out of the lake and then they must run through the forest and back to the big jump. Once they swim to the pontoon and put their hands on the air the second member is released into the course. The winning family will have both members standing on the pontoon with their hands in the air.

EVENT TWO: HANGING TOUGH

Hanging Tough is a test of will power and endurance. The clock starts when the families’ feet leave the ground. Each family member must hang over 6 meters, or 20ft, above the freezing water for as long as they possibly can. But remember, this isn’t about the last person up there. Times of the four family members will be combined, so every second counts.

ELIMINATOR:

This eliminator is fast and action packed. It starts with a series of obstacles and small walls that are close together, then the families must run around a barrel and onto the horizontal rat tunnels which are off the ground. Then it’s onto a freezing cold ice bath to slow them down. Ahead of them then lies the biggest cargo net crawl we’ve ever had on Ireland’s Fittest Family and if that isn’t enough it’s onto our 10 foot wall followed followed by our signature  ramps. The family at the top first wins the race and the loser is eliminated.
