Fleckvieh Cows
While a familiar feature on the pastures of Austria, Fleckvieh cows are a new sight on Irish farms. Helen Carroll travelled to Co. Laois to meet Gerard and Angela Brickley who keep a herd of 60 on their 80 acre
dairy farm. Fleckvieh is a dual purpose breed, not only producing good quality milk, but also high quality, valuable calves that are ideal for the beef sector. Helen joins the Brickleys for the morning milking –
something they do every day of the year.
